Artist’s Statement![]() It's been 21 years since I finished my first piece of GumArt, but I can not recall GumArt's beginning. The "primordial soup" of GumArt exists in my earliest memories. It's made up of a love for gum, the idea that nothing loved should be thrown away, and, as William Faulkner put it, the desire "...to create out of the materials of the human spirit something which did not exist before". I like to think that all the chewing and spreading is done to satisfy my own creative appetite; but, the truth is, the viewers' appreciation of the art inspires its ongoing evolution. Reactions of childlike excitement and youthful exuberance have lead hundreds of people to donate wads of chewed gum to my palette. I've learned that almost everyone loves gum so I give the sweet, chewy stuff to anyone wanting to re-experience the joy of chewing. Of course, they have to give it back when they're done. Over the years I've jawed most of what the world has to offer, I believe gum is a smile waiting to be given away, and I've created 30 works totaling more than 35,000 pieces of gum. I've now come to the realization that the gum justifies the art. The fun is in the chewing and the art is an expression of the fun. Just remember, gum is not chewed for health or sustenance. People chew gum for pleasure. It is in that spirit that GumArt exists, and I am a spreader of gum. |
